Fact Sheet
Q 鈥 I find radishes hard to grow well 鈥 what am I doing wrong?
听
Bob 鈥 I鈥檇 let radishes bolt 鈥 those little seed pods before the seeds form are delicious.听 German variety: 鈥楳unchen Bier鈥.听 I think you鈥檙e sowing them too thick.听 Thin them out early on so they鈥檙e at least an inch (2.5cm) apart.
听
Pippa 鈥 Quickest way to get something to run to seed is fluctuating or inadequate moisture levels in the soil.听 Try growing Mooli.
听
Matt 鈥 Grow it in a container of multi-purpose compost, keep it moist, and harvest when they鈥檙e quite small.
听
Q 鈥 I have a 25-year old Clematis.听 It is a tangled mess.听 How can I rejuvenate it?
听
Bob 鈥 I鈥檇 guess this is a Montana.听 Hack it back as much as you want.
听
Matt 鈥 Cut it back in stages.听 If there are six major stems then do two each year and prune straight after flowering.听
听
Q 鈥 How can you make courgettes climb?听 I grew 鈥楽hooting Star鈥 this year but they show no inclination to climb.
听
Pippa 鈥 You can鈥檛; they don鈥檛!听 Try climbing squash instead, they work much better, something like Butternut or 鈥楾urk鈥檚 Turban鈥
听
Bob 鈥 Pumpkins climb.听 Loofahs (another gourd) - I鈥檝e seen them climb 30ft.听
听
Q 鈥 I planted chitted parsnip seeds in June but have found that the plants have stunted roots 鈥 what鈥檚 wrong?
听
Bob 鈥 I suspect the bed is too loose.听 Make holes and fill with sand and sow in the top of that.听 The seed will then make one root to search for water/nutrients.
听
Pippa 鈥 High nitrogen levels would be my suspicion
听
Q 鈥 What is the best way to deal with rust on Pelargoniums?
听
Pippa 鈥 The rust loves moist, stagnant air.听 So keep air dry and well circulated.听 For already affected plants I would pinch out the affected leaves.听 Only ever water at the base.
听
Q 鈥 My daughter is getting married on June 24 next year.听 I want to grow white flowers for decoration.听 Suggestions?
听
Matt 鈥 Anything with the name 鈥楢lba鈥 in it really!听 White sweet peas, White Cosmos, grasses.听
Pippa 鈥 Successional sowing is important to raise the chance you鈥檒l have flowers on that specific day.听 White Candytufts would be nice.听 Gypsophila maybe.听 White Cornflowers.听
听
Bob 鈥 Iceberg roses
听
Q 鈥 I have a twenty-year-old Crabapple.听 It recent years I have tried grafting scions onto other trees but none seem to take. What鈥檚 going wrong?
听
Bob 鈥 You need to do it in spring as the sap rises and use pieces of wood cut off in the autumn (so they鈥檙e full of sugars).听 鈥楢pproach grafts鈥 are the easiest.听 Try making bigger grafts.
听
Matt 鈥 Try chip budding
听
Q 鈥 How can I grow asparagus from seed?
听
Bob 鈥 It鈥檚 easy but takes a couple of years.听 You only get seeds from female asparagus plants.听
听
Matt 鈥 Put them on raised beds
