Fact Sheet
Q 鈥 Do you have any advice on how to combat Mare鈥檚 Tale using green manures?听 I鈥檝e heard turnips can work.
听
Bob 鈥 Equisetum is what you鈥檙e talking about.听 It鈥檚 very invasive with roots that can cover several acres so you鈥檙e unlikely to get rid of it. Potatoes/turnips don鈥檛 actually do anything, it鈥檚 the digging and turning of the ground that gets rid of the weeds.
听
Chris 鈥 What you could do is lay a root membrane over it and then use a no dig system
听
Q 鈥 Does putting rhubarb in a hole ahead of the seed help protect the seed or is that an Old Wives鈥 Tale?
听
Pippa 鈥 It makes no sense I鈥檓 afraid
听
Chris 鈥 Theory is that raw rhubarb is unpleasant to eat and therefore it will be unpleasant to threats to the seed, but there is no science behind it. But if it makes you happy then keep doing it!
听
Q 鈥 I鈥檝e got some skirret.听 When is the best time to harvest and propagate?
听
Bob 鈥 You should sow all the seeds, select the best two, cross them, then sow them all again, select the best, cross them etc.听 Keep selecting the biggest roots and in five-to-ten years you might start getting really big ones.听
听
Q - 听I need to move some raspberry canes whilst restoring a fence 鈥 what鈥檚 the best way of doing this?
听
Chris 鈥 I think you can do it however you like. They are really invasive and strong, you鈥檒l be ok.
听
Bob 鈥 If they鈥檙e Autumn varieties you can cut them right back now and they鈥檒l be totally fine
听
Q 鈥 I have a 鈥楧uke of York鈥 peach tree in a pot. Last winter it was in the greenhouse to protect against peach leaf curl.听 When should I cover it now it鈥檚 outside?
听
Pippa 鈥 Erect a temporary, open-sided shelter to cover it.听 Against a wall is ideal.听 Cover it in polythene rather than fleece.听 Uncover once the leaves start to break.
听
Q 鈥 I鈥檇 like to grow some wild flowers on the bank of our local brook. Suggestions? They鈥檇 need to compete with the brambles and nettles that are already there.
听
Chris 鈥 Brambles and nettles are great indicator plants; you鈥檝e got deep, fertile soil.听 You鈥檙e going to struggle to compete with them without eradicating them.听 With a brook, always check who owns it before doing anything
听
Q 鈥 How can I encourage my husband to enjoy gardening?
听
Pippa 鈥 Hopefully having attended GQT will have done the trick!
听
Bob 鈥 Don鈥檛! Your garden is yours, keep it to yourself!
听
Chris 鈥 Take the Dicentra 鈥楤leeding Heart鈥 when it鈥檚 in flower.听 Pick the bloom and turn the heart upside down and open it.听 It looks like a naked lady bathing in an enamel bath tub! That should do it!
