Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Rabbi Dr Harvey Belovski, rabbi of Golders Green Synagogue and CEO of University Jewish Chaplaincy:

Yesterday was Purim 鈥 the craziest day of the Jewish calendar. We聽remember when the Jewish community lived within the ancient Persian聽Empire. An influential anti-Semite called Haman colluded with a foolish聽king 鈥 Achashverosh 鈥 to exterminate the Jews. The queen 鈥 Esther 鈥 a聽closet Jew 鈥 together with the leader of the Jewish community 鈥 Mordechai,聽saw off the threat. Every year, Purim celebrates the anniversary of their聽victory.

So far, much like other Jewish festivals 鈥 they tried to kill us, we won, let鈥檚 eat!

But Purim is unlike any other day in the year 鈥 we read the story from a聽scroll, give each other gifts of food and donate money to the poor. We also聽have a raucous feast with family and friends at which we sing, dance, bless聽each other and drink. I鈥檝e even been known to set fire to my hat to聽entertain my guests, but please don鈥檛 try this at home. I鈥檓 sorry if I sound a聽little delicate this morning鈥

The most striking feature of Purim in Golders Green, where I live, is that聽people dress up 鈥 mostly children, but even some adults, including the聽rabbi. Over the years at my synagogue, I鈥檝e read the scroll in a banana聽costume, dressed as a pirate, a Viking, a duck, a flamingo and a ballerina.聽This year, I acquired a bright orange morph-suit and arrived dressed as a聽very fetching carrot.

Apart from being great fun, there鈥檚 a serious message in dressing up and聽drinking a little more than usual. Purim comes at the end of the winter, a聽time to shake off our emotional and spiritual inhibitions. Having connected聽with God by identifying the divine hand in the Purim story, we then connect聽with others by supporting the needy and giving food gifts. Next, we聽attempt to connect with our inner lives. Disguising our external identities聽encourages us to look inwards at what really defines us 鈥 our often-聽neglected spiritual core. And at the end of a special and holy day, drinking聽in the right frame of mind enables us to shatter the barrier between our聽regular, often contrived existence and our inner reality. This allows us to聽touch, if just for a moment, a place inside us that we may not have visited聽since last Purim.
