Ian Skelly presents performances given by the 麻豆社 Scottish Symphony Orchestra. This afternoon's 2pm concert, recorded in Inverness, features orchestral masterpieces by 19th-century composers: Brahms's Haydn Variations, Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto and Strauss's tone poem Aus Italien. Then, music by Bohemian composers: Dvorak's overture to his little-known opera Vanda opens this concert, which also includes Janacek's Suite for Strings, and Dvorak's folk-tale inspired The Wild Dove, reflecting Afternoon Concert's continuing exploration of the romantic tone poem. Plus Messiaen's L'Ascension, four meditations on the Ascension of Christ.
