Bodnant Garden Fact Sheet

Q 鈥 I thought October was the best time for planting tulips but I found out that Bodnant didn鈥檛 do theirs till December.听 What is right?

听

John (Bodnant Head Gardener) 鈥 I think the right time to do something is when you鈥檝e actually got time to do it!

听

Pippa 鈥 You plant late to avoid Tulip Fire.听

听

Q 鈥 About fifteen years ago I was given a 12-inch (30cm) Eucalyptus tree in a pot.听 It is now taller than the house.听 I am fond of it so can I cut it back to a decent height?

听

Bob 鈥 I think you should cut it down.听 The branches can snap off in the wind.听 You can pollard or coppice young trees; less so with older ones

听

Matt 鈥 You can cut them back and they will respond well

听

Q 鈥 I鈥檝e been given a small plot in a polytunnel.听 Can I plant a lemon tree in it in a raised bed?

听

Bob 鈥 I鈥檇 keep it in a container 鈥 they quite like confinement.听 Keep it up higher in the warmer air.听 You will lose it in a hard frost, so keep it wrapped when frosty.听

听

Q 鈥 The soil in our garden is very stony.听 What should I grow in it?

听

Bob 鈥 Hazels.听 Most plants like stones in the soil.听 Go for perennials.听

听

Pippa 鈥 Hawthorn will do well.听 Tamarisk.听

听

Matt 鈥 I wouldn鈥檛 see it as a problem.听 Make a little Alpine bed.听 Blue Poppy (Meconopsis betonicifolia)).听 Himalayan Daphnes.听

听

Feature:

Cimicifuga

Fatsia polycarpa

Holboellia coriacea

Dutchman鈥檚 Pipe (Aristolochia)

Oreopanax

Aspidistras

Ruskas

听

Q 鈥 Where narcissi are left in the ground should I feed them?听 They are King Alfreds that have been in the ground for fifty years

听

Pippa 鈥 Definitely.听 The fancier ones run out of steam quicker than the basic ones so it鈥檚 more important to feed them to avoid them going blind.听 You can water in a general feed or use a folia feed when the leaves are still green and upright.

听

Bob 鈥 Mark where the big clumps are when they flower and then once they die back split up those big clumps

听

Matt 鈥 Make sure you deadhead them

听

Pippa 鈥 Put the feed on in spring/early-summer

听

Q 鈥 What is the best time to scarify a lawn?

听

Bob 鈥 Scarifying is scratching the lawn with a wire brush to get out the moss and old, dead grass.听 It鈥檚 a lot of work.听 I wouldn鈥檛 bother.听

听

Pippa 鈥 If you use a moss killer make sure the moss is dead before scarifying, otherwise you鈥檒l just flick the moss around the lawn.听 I would brush in a sandy top soil afterwards.听 I would do it in autumn.听

听

Q 鈥 We have a stream by the garden which now has a clay/rubble bank built upon it after it flooded.听 What can we grow in it?

听

Bob 鈥 Make sure you don鈥檛 plant anything than can break off and invade somewhere downstream.听 Primulas.听 Cowslips, primroses, drumstick Primula denticulata.听

听

Pippa 鈥 Hostas and astilbes

听

Matt 鈥 Coloured-stemmed Dogwoods.听

听

Q 鈥 We have a large Magnolia 鈥楽usan鈥.听 It鈥檚 too big (30ft x 20ft/9m x 6m); can we prune it?听 It鈥

听

Pippa 鈥 They don鈥檛 like pruning I鈥檓 afraid.听 They can get coral spot if you prune too.

听

Matt 鈥 And they get water shoots growing off them.听 If you need to prune it then I would get a professional in to do it.听

听

Bob 鈥 Leave it alone!

听

Q 鈥 My grandson bough me a terrarium that I have planted with succulents.听 I would like to grow some from seed.听 What can you recommend?

听

Matt 鈥 You can buy packets of mixed succulent seeds quite easily.听 Sow them in spring and keep them warm and moist.听

听

Pippa 鈥 You can propagate easily from just the leaf of another plant
