Fact Sheet
Q 鈥 I would like some hanging baskets but the spot gets a lot of sun.听 How can I increase water retention, stop them drying out, and can you recommend suitable plants for a drier/sunnier basket?
听
Christine 鈥 Get washing up sponges, mince them and mix them in with the soil.听 You could also line the basket with washing up sponge squares.听
听
Bob 鈥 Put plastic sheeting on the lining
听
Anne 鈥 Plant an old saucer in the base.听 Succulents like Portulacca, Pelargoniums would work
听
Christine 鈥 Mesanreanthemums would work
听
Bob 鈥 On hot days put ice cubes on top of the soil and they鈥檒l slowly melt in
听
Charlie (from Compton Acres) 鈥 We use a mixture of swell gels and John Innes-based compost.听 Grasses would work in a drier basket.
听
Q 鈥 I[ve inherited several purple/white heathers but they鈥檙e getting too big so I鈥檇 like to divide them.听 How can I do it?
听
Anne 鈥 You can鈥檛 really divide heathers because they鈥檝e got such a woody base
听
Bob 鈥 Cutting hard back will probably kill them
听
Anne 鈥 You can easily take cuttings
听
Q 鈥 Is it safe to apply moss killer where Crocuses are growing?
听
Christine 鈥 It should have any effect.听 Always read the instructions.
听
Anne 鈥 You don鈥檛 need to get rid of moss
听
Bob 鈥 Feed the lawn better rather than trying to kill the moss
听
Q 鈥 I have a problem with brown rot on my ninety-year-old apple tree.听 What can be done?
听
Bob 鈥 Old apple trees are prone to running out of potash.听 Give it some wood ash.听
听
Christine 鈥 It could be bird damage
听
Anne 鈥 Codling moth could be the culprit
听
Q 鈥 I potted a Christmas Cactus cutting twenty years ago (15cm x 10cm) and it seems happy enough but do I need to repot it?
听
Christine 鈥 I have one that鈥檚 about 4ft across!听 I would definitely repot into a slightly bigger pot (8 or 10 inches), fill that with John Innes No2 and keep it watered.
听
Peter 鈥 Unlike a regular cactus you should keep a Christmas Cactus shaded and wetter.
听
Q 鈥 I have a large courtyard which I鈥檝e filled with pots of annuals and Hostas.听 I want to propagate the Hostas from seed but only three of the plants produced seed pods.听 How can I get more seeds?
听
Bob 鈥 Hand pollination with a paintbrush is the answer
听
Christine 鈥 Feed with potash too
听
Bob 鈥 Remove the flowers that you haven鈥檛 pollinated and then the plant will put all its energy into that one
听
Anne 鈥 Sow the seeds fresh in the autumn and leave them in the greenhouse until the next spring
听
Q 鈥 I have a thyme lawn that I planted in 2013 and it has become quite patchy.听 What can I do?
听
Bob 鈥 Thymes are short-lived plants.听 Decorative ones like Dune Valley go very quickly. I would start again.
