National Space Centre

Peter Gibbs hosts the programme from the National Space Centre in Leicester. Bob Flowerdew, Bunny Guinness and Matthew Pottage answer the horticultural queries.

Peter Gibbs hosts GQT from the National Space Centre in Leicester. On the intergalactic panel this week are Bob Flowerdew, Bunny Guinness and Matthew Pottage.

They answer questions on potato best-practice, looking after an Aspidistra and keeping an Olive tree happy over winter.

Also, the panellists offer advice on growing strawberries on an allotment, moving a Hepatica, and perking up an aged and ailing Cherry tree.

Throughout the programme, Peter talks to various experts from the UK Space Agency about horticulture away from planet earth, gets his hands on some seeds that have actually been into space and back, and admires the spectacular planetarium ceiling.

Fact Sheet

Q 鈥 When are my potatoes ready for harvesting and can I leave them in the ground until I鈥檓 ready to use them?

听

Bob - When you see the flowers that means the tubers are forming.听 Give them a good watering then.听 Just take what you need and you can leave them in the soil (though you do run the risk of blight and slug damage).

听

Q 鈥 I inherited an Aspidistra from my great-grandmother and every year my sister takes a few leaves and sells them on.听 I only give the plant cold tea and neglect.听 How much longer will it continue?

听

Bunny 鈥 You can bathe the leaves in milk and that perks them up.听

听

Matthew 鈥 They are also known as the Cast Iron plant, so they鈥檙e pretty tough.听 They are almost fully hardy.听 They like it almost pitch black, so keep them in the dark.听 They don鈥檛 mind dry soil so if you鈥檝e got a Camellia or Rhododendron nearby that鈥檚 fine.

听

Q 鈥 I recently bought a large, twenty-five-year-old Olive tree.听 I want to repot it.听 What size pot should I be looking at and how do I keep it over winter?听 It鈥檚 about 5ft (1.5m) tall.

听

Matthew 鈥 This is Olea europaea.听 They are really tough so you shouldn鈥檛 worry in the winter.听 If temperature drops below -4C or -5C (24.8F or (23F) then consider insulating the pot with bubble wrap or fleece.听

听

Bunny 鈥 In Italy they often get -17C (1.4F) where the olives grow and they survive there

听

Q 鈥 I have a strawberry patch with eight rows of strawberries.听 Over the past ten years my yield has been getting smaller and smaller.听 What is going wrong?

听

Bob 鈥 Strawberries pick up a lot of virus diseases.听 Ten years isn鈥檛 a bad innings!

听

Bunny 鈥 If you鈥檙e growing them in the same space the soil is going to be deficient of the nutrients that strawberries need.听 Think about moving them around.听

听

Q 鈥 About seven years ago I bought some hepatica seed and I鈥檝e managed to get four or five plants (about 1ft (0.3m) diameter).听 I鈥檝e got to move them; do you have any tips for doing this?

听

Matthew 鈥 When lifting get as much root as possible and thin the foliage down.听 Keep it in the shade for the summer.听

听

Q 鈥 I am fascinated with Ginkgo trees (or Maidenhair).听 I want to plant a grove of them on the Welsh border but I can鈥檛 get the seeds to germinate.听 What can I do?

听

Bob 鈥 Be patient; it can take a couple of years.听 I have a Yellow Comfrey and it never comes up the first year.听 Some seeds need smoking in order to germinate; you could try that.听

听

Bunny 鈥 You could try 鈥榣ayering鈥 a branch into the soil

听

Matthew 鈥 There are some lovely forms of Ginkgo out there.听 I like 鈥楶rinceton Sentry鈥.听

听

Q 鈥 My greenhouse is in a shady position under six Birch trees.听 What should I grow given the limited temperature range?

听

Bunny 鈥 Your tomatoes will be slower but they will come.听 Do thin out the canopy.听 Use silver foil on the ground to bounce light up.听 Also, getting some cheap LED lights would make a huge difference.听

听

Matthew 鈥 Raise the crowns of the Birch; don鈥檛 chop from the top down

听

Q 鈥 We have a twenty-year-old winter-flowering Cherry tree in our garden.听 It has a tendency to look shabby in the summer.听 Could I grow a rose up it?听 What else can I do to encourage it to look healthy?

听

Bob 鈥 You hardly ever see an old Cherry tree so this isn鈥檛 in bad shape

听

Bunny 鈥 I wouldn鈥檛 prune it.听 A rose might be too shaded under the canopy.听 Put a deciduous bark mulch around the base.听
