Eric Robson and the team are at the Edinburgh Festival. Matthew Wilson, Bunny Guinness and Bob Flowerdew answer questions from an audience of local gardeners and festival goers.

The panellists explain why tomatoes are prone to splitting, ponder over a failing rhubarb crop, and suggest plants for a Japanese garden.

Eric Robson goes in search of the oldest floral clock in the world, and we answer correspondence from gardeners in Vancouver.

Fact Sheet

Q 鈥 Why do my tomatoes split as they ripen?听 The varieties are 鈥榁ilma鈥 and 鈥楽ungold鈥.

听

Bob 鈥 Usually erratic watering causes this.听 The skin has hardened as it has tried to grow and then when growing it has split.

听

Bunny 鈥 Use capillary matting to aid water retention.听 One square metre will hold a gallon of water.听 (11sqft will hold 3.8 litres)

听

Q 鈥 We often get gale force winds of over 90mph (145kmh); which hardy vegetables can you recommend on our wind-swept allotment?

听

Matthew 鈥 Swiss chard or any of the rainbow chards.听

听

Bunny 鈥 Brussel sprouts (staked).听 Leeks.听 All the brassicas.听 Kale, parsnips, carrots, Jerusalem Artichokes.听

听

Matthew 鈥 On Shetland they use what鈥檚 called a Polycrub to combat the extremely windy conditions

听

Q 鈥 I have created a wildflower patch at the bottom of my garden.听 However, part of it is in the shade and can be quite damp.听 Can you recommend plants that might survive there?

听

Bob 鈥 Go down the fern route instead of flowers.听 Native arums (Lords-and-Ladies) would be ok.听

听

Bunny 鈥 I would try native grasses like Luzula.听 Also try Geum and Galium.听 Foxgloves would love that spot.听 Epilobium (鈥榃illowherb鈥).听

听

Q 鈥 Why won鈥檛 my Crocosmia flower?听

听

Matthew 鈥 It could be too congested so try dividing it.听 I have a yellow one called 鈥楽olfatare鈥.听

听

Bunny 鈥 It used to be called Montbretia.听

听

Bob 鈥 It could be lacking potash.听

听

Feature:

听

听

Bunny 鈥 Yew (Taxus baccata).听 Vibernum opulus and 听.听 Hydrangeas.听

听

Matthew 鈥 Dog rose.听 Sloe.听 Bullis.听

Eric 鈥 鈥楽cotch Bridget鈥 apple tree

听

Q 鈥 I鈥檝e had a bad attack of powdery mildew this year.听 Is it safe to leave the leaves to mulch or do I need to clear it away?

听

Bunny 鈥 Clear it up.听 Spray milk and water solution to stave it off in future

听

Matthew 鈥 I spray courgettes and gherkins

听

Bob 鈥 I would wait till all the leaves have dropped and then I would mulch on top to bury the mildew

听

Q 鈥 I want to create a small Japanese garden at home in Scotland.听 What plants can I use?

听

Matthew 鈥 Acers, hostas, ferns.听

听

Bunny 鈥 Ilex crenata, Yew, Phyllyrea.听 Bamboo.听

听

Bob 鈥 Japanese raisin tree (Hovenia dulcis)

听

Q 鈥 What plants are the perfect match for each other?

听
