Good evening.听 Audiobooks 鈥 are you someone who gets immersed in them or do they just send you off to sleep.听 Perhaps I come in to both categories there.听 Well love 鈥榚m or think they鈥檙e a cop out the audiobook market has grown enormously in recent times so it does seem that the rest of the world is catching up on a media many blind people have been enjoying since at least 1936, when the RNIB Talking Book Library opened on gramophone records.
听
And with the festive period out of the way and January鈥檚 cold days stretching in front of us it just might be the ideal time for some guilt free listening in front of a nice warm fire.
听
Well, we鈥檝e got two guests who will bring you one audiobook recommendation each and will avidly argue for their choices I鈥檓 sure.听 First of all, Sally Clay is a musical theatre director, singer and pianist, she鈥檚 recently appeared as a judge on 麻豆社 2鈥檚 Altogether Now.听 And here she is recreating one much loved comedian, Victoria Wood鈥檚 most recognisable song.
听
Clip 鈥 Sally Clay singing Let鈥檚 Do It
听
And I鈥檓 sure, somewhere in the ether, Victoria Wood will be singing along thinking 鈥 god, there鈥檚 two of me.听 That鈥檚 Sally and Let鈥檚 Do It.听 In a couple of sentences what鈥檚 your book and why do you love it?
听
Clay
My book is Before I Go to Sleep by S. J. Watson and the reason I love it is partly the suspense, the way it kind of 鈥 it鈥檚 about somebody with amnesia, so the way it kind of unfolds very slowly and kind of drip feeds you bits of information.听 But also, just the kind of dynamic between this woman and her husband and how that unfolds throughout the book as well.
听
White
Yeah, it鈥檚 a fascinating read and listen and we鈥檒l talk about it a bit later.听 Also with us is the man who plays this lovable larrikin.
听
Clip 鈥 The Archers
听
The softer side of Jazzer that we didn鈥檛 even know was there.听 Ryan Kelly of course plays Jazzer McCreary in the Archers, alongside Fallon Rogers which was played by Joanna van Kampen.听
听
Ryan, are you a fan of reading through listening?
听
Kelly
Yeah, always have been since I can remember, since I was about three I think, only it was story tapes back then and you couldn鈥檛 find them anywhere, they were very hard to get hold of.
听
White
And what鈥檚 your book and briefly why?
听
Kelly
滨迟鈥檚 The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North.听 I loved it because it seemed to have a bit of everything 鈥 a bit of suspense, a bit of stuff that makes you think, bit of adventure.
听
White
And time travel as well.
听
Kelly
Oh absolutely, but it鈥檚 just 鈥 it鈥檚 a very sci-fi type of book, it鈥檚 great fun though, it was really good to sort of listen to.
听
White
I鈥檓 going to chime in, because it鈥檚 the presenter鈥檚 prerogative, with my own pick.听 I鈥檓 quite new to listening to books regularly because I鈥檝e always preferred reading them in braille but I鈥檓 beginning to acknowledge that listening can sometimes be a bit more convenient.听 I鈥檝e always loved hard boiled American crime fiction, going right back to some of the classic writers in the genre like Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, people like that and I鈥檓 delighted to see still being brought out.听 And I鈥檝e chosen a book by a new writer to me Steve Cavanagh, it鈥檚 called Thirteen and I鈥檒l tell you a bit more about it later on.
听
But Sally, back to you first, tell us more about your choice.
听
Clay
滨迟鈥檚 a thriller really.听 滨迟鈥檚 about a lady who every time that she goes to sleep she forgets who she is and she wakes up thinking that she is about 20 years younger than she actually is in reality.听 And she鈥檚 got this whole chunk of her memory missing, she doesn鈥檛 know where she is, she goes and looks in the mirror and thinks who the heck鈥檚 this old woman looking back at me, that isn鈥檛 me.听 And gets totally freaked out and bamboozled.听 So, her husband, Ben, is having to leave notes for her to enable her to sort of piece together her life and her history.听 And throughout the book she creates, with the help of her doctor 鈥 psychologist 鈥 a journal of her life and what鈥檚 happened and it鈥檚 all about her piecing together bits of her life and every morning she still has this kind of whole thing going on 鈥 you know waking up not knowing who she is.听 And it鈥檚 kind of resetting but every day she鈥檚 drip fed a bit more information.
听
White
And what do you think this is really about because it鈥檚 very much playing with the idea of memory isn鈥檛 it?
听
Clay
Oh yeah definitely and I think it鈥檚 also about 鈥 it鈥檚 why 鈥 what causes these traumatic 鈥 these traumatic things that cause the memory to kind of block things out and how does it work and it doesn鈥檛 come back in chronological order, it鈥檚 kind of pieces and fragments of different kinds of memory that come back to her.听 And I think it鈥檚 a lot about the dynamic between her and her husband, it鈥檚 a lot about the relationships that she has had and how they have affected her and the kind of juxtaposition between her husband now and her husband when she was younger and the things she can slowly remember about him and how he is now.
听
White
And it really is one of those books that gradually unwinds isn鈥檛 it?
听
Clay
Yeah and it is 鈥 it gets 鈥 it starts off quite slow and I suspect that if you鈥檙e anything like me, Ryan, that you would have actually felt 鈥 oh god, come on 鈥 but actually after 鈥 as it goes on it becomes a lot racier towards the end.
听
Kelly
It happened without me realising it, I must admit, I was sort of 90 minutes in and I thought do you know what, I love this, for the first 90 minutes I was going come on, come on, come on and then about, I don鈥檛 know, yeah an hour and a half or so I鈥檓 just 鈥 this is really good 鈥 and I need to sort of shut everyone up and listen to this properly, put headphones on, you know.
听
White
Can I say Sally, in some ways I found it a bit of an exasperating book.听 I mean don鈥檛 get me wrong, I did enjoy it but it鈥檚 one of those books where 鈥 I mean, for example, given the premise that she forgets everything each day I started to play this game of thinking has the author got it right, could she possibly have known that, how come she knew that.听 Like the first time she woke up I thought, possibly rather stupidly, I thought well if she doesn鈥檛 know where she is how can she find the bathroom and then of course I thought oh that鈥檚 a blind person鈥檚 thought.
听
Clay
Yeah that is a blind person鈥檚鈥laughter].听 Yeah, remember she鈥檚 got full sight, that is one of the few things she has retained.
听
White
I know but there were things, I thought hang on, has S. J. Watson made a mistake here, wouldn鈥檛 she have remembered that.听 滨迟鈥檚 really very difficult to get your head round it.听 And I suppose the author probably thinks that they can cheat a little bit because memory is so slippery.
听
Clay
Yeah and also human memory isn鈥檛 鈥 isn鈥檛 actually stored in that way, is it, it鈥檚 kind of 鈥 the human memory is reconstructive, so that does happen in real life doesn鈥檛 it, the memory is inaccurate and incorrect.
听
White
And we鈥檝e got to be aware of spoilers of course in this kind of programme but it is sort of 鈥 there鈥檚 an element of crime in all our choices isn鈥檛 there, which gradually emerges as well.听 But it鈥檚 a bit of a moany book, isn鈥檛 it?
听
Clay
It is, it can be and she鈥檚 鈥 and I must say that the female character, she is very 鈥 she is a bit of a victim and that鈥檚 the one criticism that I had of the book was that she was 鈥 it was this poor woman and all these things had happened to her and it鈥檚 kind of putting her into a very passive position.听 But actually, I think that she does kind of grow into herself as the book unfolds.
听
White
What about 鈥 they鈥檙e important, aren鈥檛 they, the voices who read.听 Ryan, what did you make of the reader of this?
听
Kelly
Oh Susanna Harker?
听
White
Yeah.
听
Kelly
I loved the narrator, I thought she was great.听 Slightly wrong accent if she鈥檚 meant to be from London, there was a little bit of a northern brogue in there sometimes.听 But it didn鈥檛 matter, she just had the right voice for it anyway, it worked for me a treat.
听
White
And I take it, Sally, as you picked it you enjoyed her reading of it as well?
听
Clay
Well yeah, I mean actually for me I always tend, when I listen to a book, to often kind of overlay whoever鈥檚 reading it with my own head voice interpretation of it, without even meaning to, it鈥檚 just a thing that happens.听 And so I suppose I kind of just get immersed in the content rather than the reader.听 Okay, if there鈥檚 somebody that I really dislike or if it鈥檚 really slow and they鈥檙e not getting the inflections right or whatever then I do find it difficult.听 But I would say that she was a very good vehicle for whatever it was that S. J. Watson was portraying.
听
Kelly
I would agree.
听
White
Yeah, and did it have a satisfying ending for you, without telling people what happens?
听
Clay
Yes, yeah.听 I thought it was good.
听
Kelly
Definitely not.
听
White
础丑鈥
听
Clay
No, you don鈥檛 think so, go on Ryan, come on then.
听
Kelly
No, I wanted to know what happened next, I wanted to know what happened when she woke up.
听
White
Well yeah, was that deliberate do you think Sally鈥
听
Kelly
Oh it definitely was.
听
White
鈥eaving it, yeah leaving it but very frustrating, you didn鈥檛 like it.
听
Clay
Oh you see I liked that, that kind of ambiguity, I don鈥檛 want to know because 鈥 she got up and she washed her hair and whatever, it 鈥 no, I think鈥
听
Kelly
滨迟鈥檚 just a matter 鈥 it鈥檚 a matter of individual taste.听 I did think that when I thought come on, I thought other people would actually love it.
听
Clay
Yeah, no, I really liked that.听 You know the film Inception, it鈥檚 kind of that bit at the end, you鈥檙e not sure what鈥檚 going on next and you鈥檙e not sure what鈥檚 going to happen, sorry I鈥檓 going off on one now.
听
White
And of course, this was made as a very successful film as well, wasn鈥檛 it?
听
Clay
Yeah, I haven鈥檛 actually seen the film yet, I keep meaning to go 鈥 to go and get it but I haven鈥檛 seen it.
听
Kelly
Nicole Kidman wasn鈥檛 it?
听
Clay
Yeah, that鈥檚 right.
听
White
So, a strong recommendation from Sally on that one and we will give some more details at the end of the programme and they鈥檒l be on the website.
听
As for my book, as I said, it鈥檚 called Thirteen.听 听I mean it is hard boiled crime fiction, I鈥檇 be the first to admit it鈥檚 got all the classic clich茅s of such books 鈥 an indestructible hero whatever they do to him; unfeasibly large consumption of alcohol by just about everybody, even more than Jazzer I think; more plot twists than a scenic railway; oh and it鈥檚 got a thoroughly amoral psychopath as well.听 But what I love about Cavanagh, the author, it鈥檚 very tightly written, deeply ingenious I think and a clever plot which you don鈥檛 always get in this kind of fiction.听
听
Raymond Chandler, who鈥檚 probably my favourite of all, was notorious for not understanding his own plots and when people asked him what was happening there, he said 鈥 I don鈥檛 know 鈥 he said 鈥 if you get stuck just put a man in a room with a gun in his hand.听 But Cavanagh is much more inventive than that, I think.听
听
And I鈥檒l explain a bit about the whole Thirteen business because the clue is in the title.听 滨迟鈥檚 not a spoiler because you know what鈥檚 going on in this book right from the start because everybody tells you, we hear from the psychopath and the defence lawyer and so forth.听 And the issue is not who鈥檚 doing what but how they鈥檙e going to do it and will it work.听 The basic premise of Thirteen is that the psychopath kills people more or less at random but then frames people he doesn鈥檛 like and then gets himself on the juries trying the case, if necessary by eliminating the odd juror in order to be sure of getting the verdict he wants.听 滨迟鈥檚 just a brilliant idea right from the start and I鈥檓 not aware of anyone else who鈥檚 done it, people can correct me if I鈥檓 wrong.听 I think it鈥檚 likely to be a very successful series and one of the things it鈥檚 really good on is juries and how they can be influenced.听 This will give you a bit of an idea.
听
Clip 鈥 Thirteen
Three really is the magic number, it holds some kind of important place in our minds and we see it all the time in our culture and daily lives.听 If you get a call from a wrong number once, well that鈥檚 just life; if you get the same call from a wrong number again, that鈥檚 coincidence; if you get a third call you know something is going on.听 The number three equates to some form of truth or fact in our subconscious.听 It is somehow divine.听 Jesus rose on the third day, the holy trinity, third time lucky, three strikes and you鈥檙e out.听 Prior made three promises, he said the word guilty three times, he said the word three, he held up three fingers, the rhythms and cadences of his speech revolved around the number three.听 I鈥檓 not going to speculate, I鈥檓 not going to theorise, I鈥檓 going to show you the truth.听 This case is about sex, money and revenge.听 Even the structure of Prior鈥檚 speech was built around that number.听 First, he told the jury he was going to tell them three things.听 Second, he told them three things.听 Third, he told them what he鈥檇 just said.
听
Ryan, are you into this type of crime fiction?
听
Kelly
Yes, I must confess I haven鈥檛 finished it yet, I鈥檝e still got about an hour to go, so do not spoil it.听 I鈥檝e not read any Steve Cavanagh before but it sort of has a Raymond Chandler/Thomas Harris aspect about it too, you鈥檝e got the lovely descriptions of the way the psychopath is doing things.听 And the narrator鈥檚 just right for it too.
听
White
Sally, I mean you haven鈥檛 finished it either but you claim you鈥檝e got an excuse, don鈥檛 you?
听
Clay
Yeah, I鈥檝e got two young kids, so that鈥檚 my excuse and I鈥檓 sticking to it.
听
White
Fair enough.听 But do you 鈥 do you enjoy this kind of 鈥 particularly the American genre but are you into crime fiction?
听
Clay
I do like crime fiction, I鈥檓 not going to say that I鈥檓 aficionado, you know, it鈥檚 not something that I generally read, although I鈥檓 very open minded about what I read, so I definitely will finish it and I think it鈥檒l be a shame not to know what actually happens.
听
White
Just before we move on to the last book, I鈥檓 quite curious about how you read, where you read and what else you do when you read.听 Sally first.
听
Clay
Going down to the shops, or whatever, I鈥檝e got my kiddy on my back and I鈥檝e got my audiobook in one ear and then she鈥檚 asking me questions about whatever鈥檚 going on in the other ear.
听
White
And what about you Ryan?
听
Kelly
On the train, outside, while I鈥檓 doing the dishes, just anywhere I feel like it really.听 I drive the wife mad at night because I always put an audiobook on before I go to sleep and if she鈥檚 generally asleep before me that drives her insane.
听
White
But can you 鈥 you see listening to these books I have regularly gone to sleep, it鈥檚 not that I didn鈥檛 like them or 鈥 I went to sleep during me own, the one I loved.
听
Clay
Yeah, I鈥檝e done that quite a lot as well.
听
White
滨迟鈥檚 been claimed on my headphones by the producer that I fell asleep in the office listening to them as well.听 That may or may not be true.听 Finally, Ryan, your book.
听
Kelly
滨迟鈥檚 The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August.听 It starts off with the fact that he remembers being here before, so to speak, and he鈥檚 actually able to put things right that he did wrong the first time or the second time or the third time, first 14 times.听 So, it鈥檚 got everything, it鈥檚 got a little bit of science fiction, a little bit of crime, as Peter said about all the books, and lots and lots of suspense.
听
White
滨迟鈥檚 funny, isn鈥檛 it, there鈥檚 a theme here isn鈥檛 there because I mean the heroine, if that鈥檚 what she is in Sally鈥檚 book, she keeps living the same kind of day and that鈥檚 in a way what happens in your book Ryan.
听
Kelly
Yeah, absolutely, yeah.听 But it鈥檚 a whole life.听 But it鈥檚 鈥 I just 鈥 I loved it, it was really intricate.
听
Clay
I loved it as well.
听
White
Tell us why Sally.
听
Clay
What I really liked about it was the fact that it wasn鈥檛 taking itself too seriously and it would jump in and out of these kind of musings, these philosophical musings, but then it would kind of go on to take the mickey.听 He meets this Thai guy, how he explains to Harry that he鈥檚 going to kill him, but it鈥檚 in such a roundabout way and it鈥檚 so funny, I was just sitting there absolutely laughing my head off.听 And her metaphors are absolutely second to none, they鈥檙e brilliant.
听
White
Ryan?
听
Kelly
The end part, where things are coming to a crunch, was the part I liked.听 I don鈥檛 want to spoil it because everyone should read this book but鈥
听
Clay
Yeah, they should, they definitely should.
听
White
Well that鈥檚 a very strong recommendation.听 Can I ask you both 鈥 because now there is quite a diversity of audiobooks, but I鈥檓 just curious to know where you pick your books from.听 Sally?
听
Clay
Well actually I got my copy of Harry August from RNIB Overdrive, the digital downloadable form of the Talking Book Library.听 I use Kindle, I use books that have been scanned in by friends and then like edited but I鈥檓 too lazy to do that.听 Plus with two children how could I possibly find the time.听
听
Kelly
Absolutely.
听
Clay
But anywhere I鈥檒l listen with synthetic speech.听 I listen using a computer, just anything.
听
White
Just about any way you can.
听
Clay
Yeah, yeah.
听
White
What about you Ryan?
听
Kelly
I like voices I鈥檓 afraid, I鈥檓 a bit picky.听 Synthetic speech, because I use it to learn lines with, when you鈥檙e sort of listening to a book with it you think hang on, am I still at work here, you know.听 滨迟鈥檚 also 鈥 it鈥檚 like listening to the scanners at the supermarket or Alexa.
听
Clay
Oh, it is actually, of yeah.
听
Kelly
There was an advent calendar, ask me to read The Night Before Christmas, I asked it to read The Night Before Christmas for the first four lines and it went off 鈥 I can鈥檛 be coping with this voice, it tries its best but it鈥檚 still a robot, no, it doesn鈥檛 work for me.
听
Clay
But it鈥檚 really slow though, I mean you know I tend to listen to my speech pretty sped up, so that it鈥檚 kind of 鈥 I don鈥檛 really notice that it鈥檚 speech.
听
White
And that doesn鈥檛 spoil it for you 鈥 speeding it up?
听
Clay
No, I mean if I had it too fast I think I wouldn鈥檛 be able to process, I mean I鈥檝e only got one brain cell at the moment that鈥檚 not used up with childrearing 鈥 that鈥檚 what I鈥檓 going to keep plugging, I鈥檓 going to keep milking it, you know.
听
White
You鈥檒l never guess this guys but Sally is a mum.
听
Kelly
Has she鈥檚 got two kids?
听
White
I think so.听 Look, thank you both for some great selections and I鈥檓 sure you鈥檙e going to add to people鈥檚 enjoyment of 2019 with all that.听 All the books we鈥檝e mentioned can be found on Amazon Audible and do tell us what you like to read and how you like to read it.听 You can email us at intouch@bbc.co.uk, you can call our actionline on 0800 044 044 and you can listen to this programme again on 麻豆社 Sounds.听 That鈥檚 it from me, Peter White, producer Lee Kumutat and our book worms 鈥 Sally Clay and Ryan Kelly.听 Happy New Year.
