Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
Tony Miles, Reverend at Methodist Central Hall Westminster:聽
A couple of weeks ago, a musician died who could鈥檝e become one of the most famous people in the world. His name was Johnny Hutchinson and he turned down an offer to join the Beatles. He never had any regrets about his decision. In the early sixties, 鈥楬utch鈥, as he was known, played for another popular Cavern Club band 鈥楾he Big Three鈥. When Brian Epstein sacked Pete Best, the original Beatles鈥 drummer in August 1962, 鈥楬utch鈥, Liverpool鈥檚 most accomplished sticksman, stood in for him.聽
Yet, he never took Epstein鈥檚 invitation to become one of the Fab Four. 鈥業 wouldn鈥檛 join the Beatles for a gold clock!鈥 he told him. Instead, he suggested Epstein ask a talented drummer named 鈥 Ringo Starr. It鈥檚 said that Ringo is now worth about 拢220 million. 鈥業t was a big call鈥 Hutch said, 鈥榖ut I have no regrets 鈥︹ Hutchinson鈥檚 attitude was amazing. He let go of what could鈥檝e been and didn鈥檛 let it screw him up. It鈥檚 a great privilege for Christian minsters like me, to help those grieving to prepare funerals for their loved ones.聽
When people are bereaved, I鈥檝e noticed how often 鈥業f onlys鈥 rise to the surface. By then, it鈥檚 sadly too late to make amends, so people end up carrying huge regrets: mistakes made; inappropriate words uttered; or sentiments left unsaid. This experience has led me to become a great believer in saying what needs to be said, and trying to do what needs to be done, without delay! In some circumstances, I鈥檝e discovered that regrets can be healthy; they can help me own my mistakes.聽
The secret is not to let them crush me, but to learn from the past and move on. Christians believe accepting forgiveness from God and others; or even being prepared to forgive myself and others, can be liberating. It鈥檚 been said, 鈥榖etween tomorrow鈥檚 dream and yesterday鈥檚 regrets, are today鈥檚 opportunities.鈥 Today is 鈥楳ay Day鈥. Summer鈥檚 almost here. To quote the Beatles, 鈥楬ere comes the sun, and I SAY it's all right!鈥 Today is a good opportunity to turn winter鈥檚 blues into summer鈥檚 promises! Rest in Peace, Hutch.
