Reflection and prayer to start the day with Bishop David Chillingworth of the Scottish Episcopal Church

Good morning.
As a grandparent, I鈥檝e re-entered the world of children鈥檚 cartoon programmes.聽 My favourites are Paw Patrol and of course Peppa Pig.聽 Sadly the children have now outgrown Peppa Pig.聽 But I have not.聽 The best of these programmes are very clever pieces of communication 鈥 funny and focused.聽 And the children absorb them and enjoy them.
But when the Edinburgh Festival begins later today, we鈥檒l find a live show to take them to.聽 We鈥檝e done the Giant Turnip and the Gruffalo in previous years.聽
It鈥檚 worth it just to see the different kind of engagement which a live stage show provides for the children.聽 They are entranced - instead of just absorbing they find themselves part of something.聽 They share the experience with the performers and the rest of the audience.聽 It鈥檚 not passive 鈥 the child鈥檚 own imagination is involved working to complete the experience.聽
I鈥檝e worked with people all my life 鈥 watched as each episode of their lives unfolds around them. 聽People can be very stoic 鈥 feeling that they just have to doggedly 鈥榯ake what comes鈥 - passively accepting the bad and the good. That鈥檚 brave 鈥 but sometimes they feel swamped or powerless.聽 Then, at other times, they become actors in the story of their own lives 鈥 playing the most creative part they can 鈥 shaping and reshaping their story with courage and聽faith.聽 聽
Lord
God
As we
are challenged by the ups and downs of life
Teach
us how to accept what happens
And
to play our part
In remaking
the drama of our own lives
With strength聽and hope.聽 Amen.
