Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Krish Kandiah, founding director of a national charity:

It was on our聽long drive聽home from university聽for the holidays that he dropped the bombshell. For environmental reasons聽my eldest son聽had become聽an ethical vegan.聽I聽couldn鈥檛 have been more shocked if he had tattooed his forehead or taken up the bagpipes! 聽I聽didn鈥檛 react well:聽Christmas dinner聽was聽going to be complicated enough already. There were 28 to cater for as our family was being joined聽by people聽who would otherwise be alone at Christmas. The last thing we needed was to be rustling up last-minute Vegan-friendly alternatives.聽

It wasn鈥檛 the first time I鈥檇 had to rethink a menu.聽I think of the four foster children who arrived at our house in the middle of the night with strict instructions about Halal聽food. I think of the emergency baby placement whose medical condition meant his swallow reflex wasn鈥檛 working. Or the teenager who came to us聽after years of going to bed hungry 鈥 he would literally grab聽all the sausages聽out of the dish before anyone else had a chance to聽even聽take one. Making food work for people has been an opportunity to show聽them聽that they matter to us. That their needs will be met.聽That they are welcome.

I find inspiration for this from my Christian faith. Jesus was always stretching expectations when it came to hospitality. Sometimes he ate with people that no-one else would. Sometimes he provided food when no-one else could. One聽of Jesus鈥 last instructions to his followers was to聽regularly聽celebrate a simple meal together 鈥 breaking bread to remember Jesus鈥 body broken on the cross and drinking wine remembering the shedding of his blood.聽Holy Communion聽is supposed to remind聽us that聽each of us聽matters聽and we can all find welcome into God鈥檚 family.

We managed to accommodate my son鈥檚 conscience at Christmas dinner with some oil-roasted potatoes and stuffed peppers - locally-sourced and delicious. As I watched him serve elderly聽guests, and聽entertain fostered children I decided it was worth the hassle. In聽fact聽his聽case for environmental veganism had rubbed off on me. This year I am聽trying to eat just聽one sixth of my previous meat intake as a step towards a more sustainable diet.聽Sometimes I think making room for others doesn鈥檛 just do them good - it does us good too.
