Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From comedian & writer Paul Kerensa:

During a steak and beer this week, I realised I鈥檇 not done well at Veganuary, or Dry January. I鈥檝e not fully committed to either, but like many, I鈥檝e cut back. Half-hearted, but at least, my glass is half-full.

As February comes, I鈥檓 sure many who鈥檝e gone vegan or dry this month, might go back tomorrow. But I wonder, if we鈥檝e made a healthy turn this year, maybe we continue down that road.

This January I鈥檝e tried topping up my spiritual health. I鈥檓 reading the Bible in a year, in order 鈥 only about seven minutes a day. So far I鈥檝e done Genesis 鈥 arks and dreamcoats 鈥 I鈥檓 onto Moses. No spoilers of where it goes from here... I鈥檝e glanced ahead, that Judas bloke looks shifty, but I reckon it鈥檒l work alright in the end. Who knows if I鈥檒l keep it up, but I鈥檓 aiming for Revelation by Christmas.

But are January changes of discipline, diet and lifestyle, just for starters? Personally I don鈥檛 do many New Year鈥檚 Resolutions 鈥 I prefer my decisions to improve not as annual reminders, like an MOT. (Yes I鈥檓 using car terminology because Paddy鈥檚 in.) With February, how about a New Month Resolution?

Because new beginnings can take longer than January allows. For example, here鈥檚 weirdness... I was a writer on Top Gear a couple of series ago, the first one post-JC. So yes: New beginnings can be tricky! Ironically for 鈥榁eganuary鈥: Paddy and I both gained work because a steak never arrived (you may recall undelivered dinner prompted that gear change).

For all of us, forward movement and change of direction can take time 鈥 and the road ahead鈥檚 unknown. But whether this year we鈥檝e stopped beef or booze, or started books, Bibles, or Beckett comedy tours... I name this month 鈥楤eganuary鈥. When things we鈥檝e began.. begun... are only the start. Hold our nerve, through Febru-scary, March through April, maybe June, July, August. Sept-remember to not get blocked-over people say No-no-november, just dig deep-cember. The year, our lives, need countless new resolutions.

Tomorrow鈥檚 always a new beginning 鈥 today鈥檚 tomorrow especially so. We鈥檙e a work-in-progress, and progressing takes work. If January鈥檚 the ignition, February, we get in gear.
