Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Much of my work is public speaking鈥攁 job transformed by the pandemic from one of hotels and conference stages to loungerooms and laptops. Recently I Zoomed in to speak at a church in Walsall. My topic was going to be听joy, but that all changed when a few days before I was due to join them one of their members passed away from Covid. Paul was in his mid-30s鈥攈e was young and fit鈥攂ut now his family was missing a father and the church a friend. This wasn鈥檛 a time of joy, but one of wilderness.

听

To me, 鈥榳ilderness鈥 is the right metaphor for times like this. Like the famous story of the Jews wandering for forty years, the wilderness is that barren place between longing and fulfilment鈥攚here you search but can鈥檛 seem to reach the 鈥楶romised Land鈥 of the relationship, career or healing you鈥檝e wanted. The wilderness is a hard place to dwell鈥攂ut in my experience, there鈥檚 hope beyond its tears.

听

Like my Walsall friends, some enter the wilderness through loss. My wife and I entered it through infertility; others enter it another way again. The chorus of Kanye West鈥檚 song听Jesus Walks听comes from, and is sung by, a gospel choir that started in a drug rehabilitation clinic.听听听As they walked through the wilderness of addiction, 鈥楯esus walks with me鈥 became not just a lyric, but a prayer that led them out of the wilderness.

听

If we were to Zoom back in history and watch the first Easter play out in real time, today Judas would cut a deal to turn Jesus in, tomorrow night Jesus would be arrested, and Friday morning he鈥檇 be crucified鈥攁 wilderness experience I can hardly imagine. But on Sunday morning rumours would spread about Jesus walking among them again, and on Sunday night we鈥檇 watch his disciples鈥 wilderness of grief turn to joy.

听

And so, while I wasn鈥檛 sure what it would look like for them, I told my friends in Walsall that because of that first Easter, in the hands of God new things could spring from their grief. Amidst the tears, I believed there was hope for them鈥攁nd us. Because after the wilderness comes a new beginning.
