Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

As I鈥檓 sure everyone knows, it鈥檚 Star Wars Day 鈥 May the 4th, as in 鈥榤ay the fourth be with you.鈥櫶

There have been many books, articles, sermons and no doubt punch-ups about the theology of Star Wars听鈥听ideas about good defeating evil, the human spirit always conquering in the end, the great mystical secrets of how Euan McGregor ever got that part and, of course, the mysterious 鈥楩orce鈥 that invisibly pervades the universe.听听No, instead of trying to debate these kind of things, I just want to tell you that I once conducted a service in my underwear.听听True.听听I was speaking at a big conference being held in the Pavilion Theatre in Glasgow one Easter weekend.听听It wasn't a religious conference but some bright spark suggested, since I was a minister, maybe they should have a wee service on the Sunday.听听So, I walked on to the stage, took off my trousers hung them over the mic stand and lead a short service in my underwear.听听

Now I did in fact have bright red long johns on, and a pair of boxer shorts on top.听听But you can imagine the reaction.听听At the end, I put on my trousers and said, now when you go back home and tell your friends that a minister lead an service in his underwear they'll all say, "Aww come on!"听听But just because they can't believe it, it doesn't mean it didn't happen - you saw it!

Like the spirituality in Star Wars 鈥 the good triumphing over evil, the Force being with you - some believe, some think it听is听just fantasy. But I believe that stuff.听听Profoundly.听听I can鈥檛 prove that good will conquer evil, that light will banish darkness, that love is stronger than hate.听听But I believe it 鈥 oh how profoundly I believe it! I鈥檝e bet my life on it.听听And I have seen the power of love to bring wholeness and hope.听听And I believe, utterly, that I am held in the gaze of a God who loves me.

Can鈥檛 prove it鈥nd it is a bit far-fetched, I know.听听But then, so is a minister taking a service in a pair of long-johns.
