Alan helps with a spiritual crisis and Susan鈥檚 ideas miss the mark.
Susan recounts to Jennifer, in a not altogether approving manner, Joy鈥檚 life modelling exploits. Nevertheless Joy gets Susan鈥檚 vote for parish council. Disappointed to hear Jennifer has everything in hand for Martha鈥檚 christening, Susan updates Jennifer on her own plans: party favours and Martha-shaped biscuits for every guest. Jennifer insists weakly that she sees them. She declares the biscuits 鈥榠nteresting鈥 and doesn鈥檛 need to say any more. Susan understands they鈥檙e not what Jennifer was expecting 鈥 but they鈥檙e a way of expressing her love and pride for the new little family. Surely Jennifer feels the same about her own part in the arrangements? Jennifer admits she does, and the two bond and laugh over the odd-shaped biscuits. Jennifer offers to join forces to make them spectacular.
Alan walks stressed Alice through Thursday鈥檚 christening service. He鈥檚 pleased Alice asked for this christening. But Alice feels God must be judging her terribly. She鈥檚 selfish and she鈥檚 hurt people she loves. Alan reassures her; God鈥檚 love is unconditional. He explains the meaning behind a baptism and suggests a reading. Alice is loved; there is forgiveness and hope for the future, if she wants it. Later Alice admits she鈥檚 struggled to see a future. But she鈥檚 found a picture from the past, which together with Alan鈥檚 words, has unlocked part of her brain. As she and Chris choose pictures together for an album, Alice saves space for one which will include Martha on her first holiday; they鈥檙e going to the beach.
