The Dutch came into this championship with a point to prove, having failed to qualify for the two previous major tournaments and with star defender Virgil van Dijk ruled out through injury.

Austria experienced their own difficulties in the build-up, with coach Franco Foda criticised for a conservative playing style, while they secured just one point from three matches at Euro 2016.
