Music, chat and David Bowie鈥檚 Hunky Dory at 50

Mark presents a feast of great music and chat, and celebrate the 50th anniversary of David Bowie鈥檚 acclaimed album 鈥楬unky Dory鈥.

Mark Radcliffe presents a feast of great music and chat for weekend breakfast.

Today they mark the 50th anniversary of David Bowie鈥檚 acclaimed fourth album 鈥楬unky Dory.鈥 Although it was well received by critics when it was released on 17th December 1971, it wasn鈥檛 a commercial success until Bowie had his real breakthrough with his follow-up album鈥 1972鈥檚 鈥楾he Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.鈥

Recorded in London鈥檚 Trident Studios, Hunky Dory features guitarist Mick Ronson, drummer Woody Woodmansey and Rick Wakeman on piano. Praised for its sound and songwriting, the album was influenced by Bowie鈥檚 first visit to America and includes some of Bowie鈥檚 best loved songs including 鈥楲ife on Mars鈥, 鈥楥hanges鈥, 鈥極h! You Pretty Things鈥 and 鈥楰ooks鈥 鈥 a song written for his newborn son Duncan Jones. Mark and Stuart play some of their favourite tracks from the album and discuss its significance and influence since its release fifty years ago.

Also on the show鈥 a host of quality radio items including 'The Chain' - our world-famous list of over 8000 interconnected songs.

There鈥檚 also the chance to take part in 鈥楾ea Time Theme Time鈥, guessing the link between three top tunes.

Plus a finely balanced blend of new and old music, setting you up for a Sunday.
