Tax: why pay it?

Tax can be a divisive issue - who should pay it, and how much should we pay? Roy Jenkins and guests discuss the issues.

Tax is an issue which none of us can avoid. It can spark furious debate, be the cause of sleepless nights, and it鈥檚 just hastened the demise of a prime minister and her government. Few of us relish paying tax, but most accept that it鈥檚 the price of living in a society. But can it ever be made fair? How much should the well-off be paying? And how is a religious faith meant to shape how its followers approach such questions? Roy Jenkins is joined by four guests to discuss the issues. Rebecca Reading is a tax specialist and partner at Lewis Golden. She鈥檚 been a tax director for Price Waterhouse Cooper and Tata Steel. Ross Hendry is the CEO of CARE (Christian Action, Research and Education.) He trained in economics, and has held a variety of positions dealing with public policy. Sue Richardson is a Catholic and Chair of 鈥楥hurch Action for Tax Justice鈥, whose latest campaign appeals for a one-off wealth tax on the country鈥檚 richest people. Andy Hartropp is an economist and an Anglican minister, he鈥檚 the author of 鈥楪od鈥檚 Good Economy.鈥
