Sir Simon Rattle ends his final Barbican concert as LSO Music Director with Messiaen鈥檚 Turangal卯la-Symphonie, joined by two of his oldest musical collaborators 鈥� pianist Peter Donohoe and Ondes-Martenot player Cynthia Millar.
'Joy in the blood of the stars鈥� 鈥� Olivier Messiaen
In Turangal卯la, named from two Sanskrit words, turanga and l卯la, meaning roughly 'time' and 'love', Messiaen wanted to create a "love song and hymn of joy, time, movement, rhythm, life, and death." This inventive piece is like no other - a work of huge structural scope that strives to convey, from most tender to most wild, its basic theme: love. Betsy Jolas鈥� music is more understated 鈥� but it still packs a tremendous emotional punch.
