Rachmaninov and Stravinsky

Ryan Wigglesworth conducts the 麻豆社 Scottish Symphony Orchestra in works by Stravinsky and Abrahamsen. Sir Stephen Hough joins in Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

鈥淢y heartfelt homage to Tchaikovsky鈥檚 wonderful talent鈥. Audiences in the 1920s were astonished when the modernist firebrand Stravinsky started adapting Tchaikovsky. In fact, Stravinsky adored Tchaikovsky鈥檚 music, and his ballet The Fairy鈥檚 Kiss puts Tchaikovsky鈥檚 music under a very modern 鈥 but utterly captivating 鈥 spell. Before that pianist Stephen Hough joins the 麻豆社 Scottish Symphony Orchestra to work his very personal alchemy on Rachmaninov鈥檚 hugely-popular Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. And the concert begins with music by Hans Abrahamsen: conductor Ryan Wigglesworth conjures orchestral enchantment in selections from the fairy-tale opera, The Snow Queen.
