29/04/24: Cider orchard, Apples, Plant diseases

Heineken, which makes Bulmers cider, is ripping out an orchard and selling it off because the company says fewer people are drinking cider.

The largest cider manufacturer in the UK 鈥 Heineken 鈥 has ripped up thousands of apple trees in a 140 acre Monmouthshire orchard. The company says it is selling the land due to a fall in the cider market.

Apple fruit orchards are suffering a similar fate, as the cost of production far exceeds the market value for growers.

And another legacy of the warm wet winter is an increase in plant diseases.
