One of the world鈥檚 great orchestras, the Vienna Philharmonic concludes this year鈥檚 triptych of ninth symphonies with the grandest of them all. Dedicated to God, Bruckner鈥檚 Symphony No. 9 is the extraordinary product of a career鈥檚 experience and a decade鈥檚 labour 鈥� an unfinished swansong that confronts darkness even as it grasps towards heaven in music the composer himself thought 鈥榯he most beautiful I have ever written鈥�. The concert opens with Berg鈥檚 Lulu Suite, a distillation of the composer鈥檚 tragic opera into a heady and sometimes violent outpouring for orchestra.
