England, 1950s. Nineteen-year-old Margaret is about to marry a dull middle-aged man, but she would really rather become a nun than a housewife. As the wedding draws closer, the guests arrive, including the free-spirited Lili, who observes Margaret's unhappiness and determines to prevent the marriage.
