Mahler's Fourth Symphony

The London Philharmonic Orchestra perform Mahler's Fourth Symphony, and are joined by the rising star soprano Jennifer France in Hans Abrahamsen's modern classic, Let me tell you.

In tonight's Radio 3 in Concert, performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra with their principal conductor Edward Gardner, Mahler's Fourth Symphony meets a modern classic - Hans Abrahamsen's song-cycle, Let me tell you. It's a song-cycle based on Paul Griffiths' novel of the same name, and it follows the narrative of Ophelia from Shakespeare's Hamlet as she tells her tragic story from her own perspective. The soprano Jennifer France was the winner of the 2018 Critics’ Circle Emerging Talent Award, and she joins the London Philharmonic Orchestra to sing Abrahamsen's Let me tell you.

Mahler's playful Fourth Symphony is the last of his Wunderhorn symphonies, and it includes the song setting Das himmlische Leben (The Heavenly Life), which depicts a child's dream of heaven. Mahler wrote his Fourth Symphony in 1899 during his holiday in Bad Aussee, and the whole symphony is imbued with the sounds of nature, bird songs, sleigh bells and morning bells.

Recorded on 3rd October at the Royal Festival Hall in London, and presented by Martin Handley.
