Steve Martin & Alison Brown!
Hollywood comedy and banjo mastery combine in Mark's guests: Steve Martin & Alison Brown. The duo have recorded an album called Safe, Sensible & Sane.
Mark speaks to two of America's great banjo players: Alison Brown and Hollywood actor and comedian Steve Martin.
The two Grammy-winning musicians have formed a duo and recorded an album called Safe, Sensible & Sane.
Guests on the record include Jackson Browne, Vince Gill, Indigo Girls, Sarah Jarosz and, from the UK, the trio McGoldrick, McCusker & Doyle.
Alison Brown's extraordinary recording career began in the late 1980s. In 1991, she was the first female musician named Banjo Player of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. Besides her extensive solo work, Alison has worked with artists including Alison Krauss, B茅la Fleck and Michelle Shocked. Alison co-founded Compass Records in 1995.
Steve's banjo life began in his teens, and during the 1970s and 80s the banjo featured in his stand-up routines. In 1981, he released a double album of comedy and music, and by 2001 he was accompanying the legendary Earl Scruggs on Scruggs' starry reworking of the Foggy Mountain Breakdown. Steve's later collaborators included The Steep Canyon Rangers and Edie Brickell, with whom he wrote a folk musical called Bright Star.
