The Welsh Winter Fair 2025
Join Country Focus at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair for prizewinning livestock, festive food and craft producers, and a behind-the-scenes look at the bustling auctions.
Country Focus comes from the Royal Welsh Winter Fair in Llanelwedd, the annual event that heralds the start of the festive season for rural Wales. Ifan Jones Evans is at the showground where the very best livestock from across the UK is on display.
Megan Williams meets cattle judge Mike Rowlands ahead of two days of fierce competition in the ring, discovering what it takes to select the champions among heifers and steers. We also hear from talented food producers and crafters who make the Winter Fair a Christmas shopping highlight, offering everything from premium Welsh festive fare to handmade gifts.
Rhodri Davies goes behind the scenes with auctioneers McCartneys to uncover their pivotal role at the Fair, from how the auctions work to the electric atmosphere as buyers bid for top-quality stock. The team also discusses industry challenges, including bluetongue, and the strong prices expected across the sections.
Finally, Megan brings us ringside for the climax of the Cattle Section as the Supreme Champion is crowned.
With a packed showground, dedicated exhibitors and enthusiastic buyers, it is a vibrant celebration of Welsh agriculture at its winter best.
