A special programme looking ahead to Burns Night

Academic Stephen Mullen and Jamaican poet Lorna Goodison on Robert Burns and the connection to the Caribbean, and She Burns, a feminist reimagining of Burns's background and life.

In a special programme ahead of Burns Night, Len talks to Lorna Goodison, former Jamaican Poet Laureate, and Dr Stephen Mullen, a specialist in Scotland鈥檚 role in Caribbean slavery, about Level Vibes, an international poetry project from the Scottish Poetry Library exploring the longstanding cultural connections between Scotland and Jamaica through poetic voices and critical discourse. The SPL invited Jamaican poets to respond to the legacy of Scotland鈥檚 national poet, Robert Burns, who bought passage to Jamaica three times with the intention of working as a bookkeeper on a sugar plantation, but never sailed.

And we hear about She Burns, a feminist reimagining of Burn鈥檚 background and life, taking place at the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Ayrshire on Friday night. Creator Sarah McGillivray and Musical Director Nicola Alexander join Len to discuss the women in Burns's life.
