Uttoxeter 1

Natasha Raskin Sharp speaks to a retired chemist, known affectionately as a 鈥榬ailway stink鈥, and learns how they helped to solve the perennial problem of leaves on the line.

The secrets of the 鈥榬ailway stinks鈥 are revealed in this episode from the East Midlands. Natasha Raskin Sharp meets retired railway chemist Dave Smith, who spent 34 years analysing trains and tracks. Dave and his colleagues earned their dubious nickname from working in smelly laboratories.

It鈥檚 full steam ahead at the antiques fair at Uttoxeter Racecourse, where two teams of friends hope that Natasha鈥檚 challenges won鈥檛 derail their shopping plans. With expert Irita Marriott by their side, supermarket workers Darren and Sarah spot an early-20th-century tray made of copper from HMS Britannia. It doesn鈥檛 float Irita鈥檚 boat, so the tray goes on the back burner.

Over on the other side of the fair, John Cameron and his blues, Barbara and Amanda, put the squeeze on the seller of a bacon press until they spot a dink in the metal. And eyebrows are raised at Colin Young鈥檚 auction when a piece of Scandinavian jewellery, rejected by one team, goes under the hammer for their opponents.
