Katya visits Italy and Germany to explore how they鈥檙e changing in the turbulent new world.

At Siena鈥檚 famous Palio horse race, Katya gets the rare opportunity to join one of the city鈥檚 contrade, or local neighbourhoods, on the eve of the race, which proves surprisingly relevant to understanding how Italy works. Nearby, in the Tuscan hills, she joins Italian paratroopers on a Nato exercise with 1,500 soldiers from seven different countries.

Then she travels to Germany, where she visits Volkswagen鈥檚 car factory to learn how they鈥檙e being affected by both Russia and China. And in Germany鈥檚 far south, not far from Munich, she meets Christian Klaus and his family, who are building a house with a nuclear bunker.
