Linton Stephens with another programme of specially recorded performances from the UK and abroad. Pianist Mih谩ly Berecz performs Hungarian music by Bartok and Liszt, and we hear Haydn鈥檚 鈥楤ird鈥� Quartet from former Radio 3 New Generation Artists the Leonkoro Quartet. This week鈥檚 featured ensemble The Ulster Orchestra opens the programme with Sibelius鈥檚 deeply romantic Suite King Christian II; they鈥檙e joined by Irish pianist Finghin Collins for a performance of Stanford鈥檚 2nd Piano Concerto, composed as a direct response to hearing Rachmaninov鈥檚 2nd Concerto, and the Ulster Orchestra end today with Shostakovich鈥檚 Symphony No. 9 鈥� a piece full of orchestral brilliance.
