Michael Portillo鈥檚 railway adventure through Uzbekistan reaches its finale in the historic city of Bukhara. Amidst the medieval Islamic architecture, Michael goes in search of a centuries-old Jewish community. Stepping inside a 420-year-old synagogue and a family home, he鈥檚 introduced to unique customs and traditions, and a fragrant green dish that has made Bukharan Jews famous worldwide.

Michael grapples with kurash, an ancient form of upright wrestling once used to select the bravest warriors and now also increasingly popular as a sport for young Uzbek women.

Michael鈥檚 exploration of Uzbekistan culminates in the vast Kyzylkum Desert, where he experiences the life of nomadic tribes who once roamed its vast sandy plains. His Central Asian journey concludes among the horses and riders who brave all to take part in one of the most dangerous equestrian sports in the world.
