Gabriela Lena Frank's El 脷ltimo Sue帽o de Frida y Diego
Gabriela Lena Frank鈥檚 portrait of Mexico鈥檚 volatile power couple. Isabel Leonard is a blazing Frida Kahlo, Carlos 脕lvarez her Diego Rivera, with Yannick N茅zet鈥慡茅guin conducting.
Live from the Metropolitan Opera in New York, El 脷ltimo Sue帽o de Frida y Diego 鈥 the first opera by 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Music winner Gabriela Lena Frank 鈥 with a Spanish鈥憀anguage libretto by Pulitzer Prize鈥憌inning playwright Nilo Cruz.
Fashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, El 脷ltimo Sue帽o de Frida y Diego is set during Mexico鈥檚 Day of the Dead. It imagines Frida Kahlo returning from the underworld for a final, dreamlike reunion with Diego Rivera as his life draws to a close. The famously feuding pair relive their volatile love, embracing both passion and pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell.
The Metropolitan Opera鈥檚 new production, choreographed and directed by Deborah Colker, draws visual and emotional inspiration from Kahlo and Rivera鈥檚 paintings, weaving image, movement and sound with Gabriela Lena Frank鈥檚 vibrant, colour鈥憇aturated score. Yannick N茅zet鈥慡茅guin conducts the Metropolitan Opera Chorus and Orchestra.
Presented live from the Met by Debra Lew Harder and Ira Siff.
