Since losing in the final for a second time in 1962 as Czechoslovakia, they have only once made it past the initial group stage – reaching the quarter-finals in 1990. This is their first World Cup in 20 years. They could rely on the experience of West Ham’s Tomas Soucek in midfield.

Despite not getting out of the group stage in any of their three previous World Cups, the Bafana Bafana have only lost three of their nine matches, and famously beat holders France in 2010.
