Prayers from the Hymnal: Love Divine, All Loves Excelling

A spiritual comment and prayer to start the day with Julia Loveless.

Prayer for the Day presented by Julia Loveless, worship leader & singer-songwriter.

Good morning. Love Divine, All Loves Excelling was written by Charles Wesley in 1747 and has become one of the most treasured hymns in the Christian songbook. At its heart is a simple but extraordinary prayer - that the love of God would continue its work within us, changing and transforming us day by day. Wesley describes God鈥檚 love as the greatest love of all; a love that heals, restores, forgives and makes us whole. And aren鈥檛 we all longing for that transformation in some way? We know our own shortcomings all too well. We are fully aware of the ways we fall short of the people we hope to be. Yet the message at the centre of the gospel is that God meets us exactly where we are, but never leaves us there. Slowly, patiently and faithfully, He continues the work of renewing us. And not through our strength or effort, but, through a simple surrender to Him, it is His strength and His effort that transforms us. So today, friends, let鈥檚 rest in His promise that He will 鈥榗arry on to completion the work he began in us鈥 and may the words of Wesley鈥檚 hymn become our prayer too; 鈥淔inish then Thy new creation, pure and spotless let us be. Let us see thy great salvation; perfectly restored in thee. Changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love and praise. Amen.
