Jemma and Stephen reveal how they have settled into their new lives in Vancouver, Danielle explains why she moved to Philadelphia, and Bethany, whose grandfather emigrated from Belfast to Ottawa, plays her pipes on stage with a local punk band.
Jemma Redmond from Cullybackey, County Antrim, was immersed in the world of pipe bands from a young age. It鈥檚 where she met Stephen Paynter, from Markethill, and together they made the life-changing decision to emigrate to Vancouver. Far from home, the couple joined the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band, where they found friendship as they adapted to their new lives. Together for 20 years, they make the journey home to Northern Ireland for their wedding at Belfast鈥檚 City Hall to celebrate their special day with their family and friends.
In Philadelphia, Danielle Hamilton Cooper, from Cookstown, County Tyrone, has made a new life with her husband, Derek. They are first-time parents to their baby son, Dawson, and are also members of the Ulster-Scottish Pipe Band, which has been a passion of Derek鈥檚 family for generations, and helped Danielle settle in Philadelphia. Danielle and Derek celebrate Independence Day with their family and friends with a party hosted by his mother, Traci.
Bethany Bisaillion is pipe major with the Sons of Scotland Pipe Band in Ottawa and brings her band to Glasgow every year to compete in the World Pipe Band Championships. Bethany has a strong ancestral connection with Northern Ireland since her grandfather William Sloan emigrated from Belfast to Canada in the 1920s. An eclectic music fan, when she is not practicing with the Sons of Scotland, Bethany can be found taking to the stage with her pipes to play with a local punk band.
