The DPD Murder, Part 4: Killers on the Run

Episode 3 of 8

Detectives hunt the remaining suspects in the murder of Aurman Singh. Financial data and international cooperation lead detectives to two fugitives hiding in plain sight in Austria.

Five men are convicted of the murder of 23-year-old DPD driver Aurman Singh, ambushed and killed on a Shrewsbury street by a gang of eight. However, four suspects escaped in a white Mercedes, and DCI Mark Bellamy's team is determined to bring them to justice too.

With no eyewitness able to identify the fugitives, detectives piece together events using CCTV, phone records and ANPR data. The Serious Organised Crime Unit is brought in to help put names to faces, and surveillance operations are launched. However, leads dry up and raids draw a blank. Every passing day increases the risk that the suspects will disappear for good.

The hunt for two of the suspects yet to be found intensifies when financial data places them in Europe. Detectives track a bank card used at a Paris hotel and then at a series of small transactions in a quiet Austrian town. This trail leads them to Sehajpal Singh and Mehakdeep Singh. They are hiding in plain sight, working at a local delivery depot, apparently hoping to wait out the investigation. Austrian police confirm their location and identity, and officers authorise an operation to arrest and extradite them back to the UK.
