James Fox asks how Michelangelo's David became one of the most famous artworks in the world.

Michelangelo's David is an art world celebrity. Millions of tourists gaze up at him in Florence, millions more have the t-shirt, the comedy underpants, the fridge magnet. But how and why did this 5 metre tall statue become a global star?

In this series, art historian Dr James Fox traces the twists of fate and happy accidents that pushed a handful of artworks to the forefront of pop culture. For David, that began in 1504 with a momentous decision to place him not on the roof of the cathedral, as originally planned, but in the town square.

As James traces the story of David's fame, he talks to those who know him best, including a Florentine tour guide, a Florida school principal who lost her job over David and the man tasked with replicating the statue for Ridley Scott's film Alien: Covenant.
