Cristian M膬celaru, whose own childhood was spent in communist Romania, conducts the 麻豆社 Symphony Orchestra in Shostakovich鈥檚 devastatingly powerful Symphony No. 10. Premiered after Stalin鈥檚 death in 1953, it鈥檚 a work whose fierce rage, violence and grief tell a terrifying story of life in the dictator鈥檚 Russia 鈥 a painfully personal history and one shot through with the composer鈥檚 own musical signature: DSCH. The concert opens with the UK premiere of 脡dith Canat de Chizy鈥檚 intricately textured Skyline for three percussionists, timpani and orchestra 鈥 a musical vision of the cosmos, from void to teeming, multiplying musical life.
