Burnham Announces Changes To Prisoner Release Scheme
Andy Burnham pledges to keep hundreds more criminals behind bars.
Andy Burnham has pledged to keep hundreds more criminals behind bars as part of changes to the government's early release scheme. Anyone convicted of unlawful killing will now be excluded, including two men jailed for the manslaughter of PC Andrew Harper. But some prison governors fear jails could soon become full. In other news: at least eight people have died and 22 others are missing after a passenger ferry capsized and sank off northern Cyprus; and people in Iceland have voted against resuming talks on joining the European Union.
