Seventy-four-year-old John arrives with life-threatening burns after his shed explodes, and a young father with a brain clot needs an urgent specialist procedure.

Trauma team leader Phil is overseeing a packed emergency department when 74-year-old John arrives with injuries from a battery explosion that destroyed his shed. He has severe burns to his head and arms, carrying a 41 per cent risk of death. Burns registrar Say How knows John urgently needs surgery, but with only one theatre free, another patient is judged to have even more urgent needs.

Elsewhere, 26-year-old father Ian arrives with a life-threatening brain clot. His partner Nicole reaches the hospital just before consultant interventional radiologist Aubrey begins a complex mechanical thrombectomy, leaving her and Ian's family waiting for updates as the procedure unfolds.
