Grieg's music from Ibsen's play Peer Gynt depicts dawn in the Moroccan desert.
Grieg's instantly recognisable piece often conjures up images of the Norwegian homeland, rather than Peer Gynt waking up in the desert. It is bound up with the Norwegian national identity to the extent that a Duke Ellington jazz version was banned in the country for nearly a decade. Saxophonist Magnus Bakken has performed Ellington's version many times in his native Norway.
Mona Hovest酶l James and Viggo Kr眉ger use this relaxing music therapeutically, whereas the song is blasted out by Norway's partying school leavers, and is a welcome respite for everyone kept awake all night by the traditional 'russbusser.'
