Emily Wittbrodt and Regan Bowering in session

Jennifer Lucy Allan welcomes Emily Wittbrodt and Regan Bowering into the studio as the newest pairing in our exclusive series of Late Junction collaboration sessions.

Jennifer Lucy Allan presents our latest exclusive collaborative session between Emily Wittbrodt and Regan Bowering.

Emily Wittbrodt is a cellist and composer based in Cologne, Germany. Her most recent project, Wearing Words, focused on the pairing of words in English - her second language - with melodic shapes composed on the cello weeks previously. These pairings were then brought to life by opera singer Sandro H盲hnel, written in Emily鈥檚 higher vocal range to give the finished piece a 鈥榞enderless鈥 quality. These tracks were then furnished with 鈥渇lurries of improvisation鈥.

Regan Bowering is a percussionist and composer based in London whose practices focus on various microphone and amplification techniques to create layered, feedback-laden soundworlds using her drumkit. Regan鈥檚 work plays with - and responds directly to - space. It鈥檚 an approach much in evidence in her most recent project, A Technology of Feeling, where material recorded in a controlled studio environment is brought together with sounds gathered at Boston Waterworks Festival, where she utilised 鈥渢he cavernous acoustics of [an] old water pump station鈥 to reveal 鈥渢imbral nuances and tactile detail鈥.

Elsewhere in the show: hip hop-rooted catharsis from the ongoing collaboration between the duo Saint Abdullah and producer Eomac; instrumentals from the vaults courtesy of Ryuichi Sakamoto's Yellow Magic Orchestra; and a triumphant return in the form of songwriter and accordionist Baby Dee鈥檚 first album in eleven years.
