2. Unusual Suspects

With the Irish Crown Jewels missing just days before a royal visit, investigators face a baffling mystery with no signs of a break-in and a growing list of suspects.

In the summer of 1907, days before a Royal visit, the Irish Crown Jewels vanish from Dublin Castle. The theft triggers a scandal that rocks the British establishment and captures public attention on both sides of the Irish Sea. The safe in which they were kept is intact, and there are no shortage of suspects or rumours.

As investigators search for answers, suspicion falls on an extraordinary cast of characters: staff, aristocrats, soldiers, officials and socialites, all operating within or around a world of privilege, secrecy and influence.

Featuring expert analysis and using archival material, this series retraces the events leading up to the theft and examines those at the heart of the case to ask who had the means, motive and opportunity to carry out the heist of the century?
