Episode 2
Eighty thousand Ugandan Asians suffer brutal repression at the hands of Idi Amin鈥檚 regime as Britain races to organise a mass evacuation before the 90-day deadline runs out.
In September 1972, one month after dictator Idi Amin announces his plan to expel all Ugandan Asians from the country, 80,000 people are making plans to flee, in fear for their lives. Maz and Bharti head for the capital Kampala, where hundreds gather, desperate to find out whether their British passports will be enough to escape to Britain.
As the deadline approaches, Harminder鈥檚 father escapes arrest and schoolboy Paresh hides during overnight curfews while gunfire echoes across the city.
Britain is divided. Controversial politician Enoch Powell rallies those who say the Ugandan Asians have no right to come, a newspaper poll finds just six per cent of the public want them here, and some councils try to steer new arrivals away from their cities.
In Uganda, Amin refuses to negotiate 鈥 stepping up the pressure on those stuck in the country.
