The 麻豆社 had had a presence on the internet from 1994, but Lord Birt, then the Director-General of the 麻豆社, was quick to recognise its real potential for public service broadcasting. He sought the advice of young people working in the Corporation about which way the 麻豆社 should turn in the fledgling online world. Following a trip to Silicon Valley in the United States, he drew up the blueprint for 麻豆社 Online.
