The ‘fog of peace’ – how best to end wars?
The “fog of war” refers to the difficulty of making decisions in the midst of conflict, when there are so many uncertainties. But is peace foggy too? The authors of a new book, The Fog of Peace think so. In it they argue that the most important aspect of conflict resolution is for antagonists to understand their opponents as individuals, and getting into the mind of the enemy can be far more persuasive than the most fearsome weapons. The authors are Giandomenico Picco, a veteran UN negotiator and Gabrielle Rifkind, a psychotherapist and conflict resolution expert.
