A passenger who was onboard the Qatar Airways flight that was escorted into Manchester Airport by a fighter jet says he found out about the incident via Twitter.

Matthew Cox also confirmed that police escorted a man off the plane once it had landed.

"I was pretty scared," he said.

An RAF spokesperson confirmed that the aircraft was launched to investigate a civilian aircraft whose pilot had requested assistance.

They added that the aircraft landed safely and the incident was being handled by civilian authorities.
