The world has lost half its wildlife in the past 40 years according to the World Wide Fund for Nature.

Populations of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish have declined by an average of 52%. Freshwater species populations have suffered a 76% decline, an average loss almost double that of land and marine species.

The WWF's Living Planet Report looked at 10,380 populations of 3,038 species across the globe.

Chief Executive of WWF, David Nussbaum, told Rachel Burden "This is really serious news for us. It's particularly the way we humans are using up the habitats where these animals live."
