Serena Williams moves ahead of Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert with a 19th major singles title, second only to Steffi Graf, after defeating Maria Sharapova 6-3 7-6 (7-5) in a pulsating final in Melbourne.

The victory was Willaims' sixteenth in a row over the world number 2, dating back to 2004.
